Diagnosis
We always check for periodontal disease during your regular check-up.
A periodontal probe is gently used to measure the spaces between each tooth and the gum. The pocket depth in healthy mouths measures three millimeters or less and does not bleed. As periodontal disease progresses, the pockets usually get deeper. We always record these measurements and compare to previous exams
You’ve no doubt heard the word ‘gingivitis’ before. Gingivitis is the first stage of periodontal disease. Plaque and its toxin by-products irritate the gums, making them tender, inflamed, and likely to bleed. After gingivitis, the next stage is periodontitis, with more severe problems, and, if left untreated, the much more severe advanced periodontitis.
